Board Composition and Skills

The composition of the Board reflects the needs of the Charity to ensure that the assets of the Charity are appropriately monitored and controlled, and that the assessment of the healthcare & medical benefits of prospective awards are considered by skilled medical professionals.

Of the 5 Board members two are qualified accountants, two are senior consultants in the medical profession and one is a qualified Mineral Surveyor.

 

Professor Elizabeth Hughes MBE  FRCP

Professor Elizabeth Hughes MBE is Deputy Medical Director of Health Education England with specific responsibility for Undergraduate Medical Education. She was previously the Director and Dean of Education and Quality for Health Education England for London and South East.

Alongside this she has other national roles for HEE including overseeing education in Pharmacy, Diagnostics and Healthcare Science together with a focus on international medical education.

Professor Elizabeth Hughes is also a Consultant in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine at Sandwell General Hospital, West Bromwich and Honorary Professor at both the University of Birmingham and University of Aston and visiting Professor at Worcester University. Elizabeth is a national expert in the treatment of inherited lipid disorders and is one of the Founder members of the national charity HEARTUK with which she has worked extensively with multi professional healthcare professionals and patients.

 

Dr P J Cadigan FRCP FRCPI (hon) FRCEM (hon) FFLFM (hon)

Patrick Cadigan worked as a Consultant Cardiologist at Sandwell and West Birmingham hospitals until his retirement in 2018.

In addition to his clinical work he was Director of Training (Linacre Fellow) and then Registrar at the Royal College of Physicians of London.

In the latter part of his career he provided clinical input to Monitor and NHS Improvement as an Associate Medical Director.

 

John D Pears  FRICS, FIMMM,  CEng, FIQ

John is Chartered Mineral Surveyor and Chartered Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in the mining and mineral industry. Until 2018, he was a Director and head of Wardell Armstrong’s Mineral Estate Management team.

He has acted for numerous land, and mineral owners throughout the UK and has worked on mineral and mining projects in South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka before settling in North Staffordshire.

Between 2005 and March 2020, John held the appointment of Crown Mineral Agent with The Crown Estate and Crown Estate Scotland with responsibility for the management of the Estate’s onshore mineral assets, including Gold and Silver, throughout most of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

 

Richard Arkle FCA – Chairman

Richard was educated at Clifton College, Bristol and graduated from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He qualified with KPMG as a chartered accountant in UK and Canada, becoming a partner in 1982 and retiring in 2004. His clients included Focus Wickes, Steelite and University of Keele and his roles included managing their UK healthcare practice.

He has been Chairman of Volex plc, a non-executive Director of North Staffs Health Authority, SDI Group plc and Cash Management Systems Ltd.

 

Ian  Goalen FCA – Managing Trustee

Ian was educated at Kings Macclesfield and graduated from Birmingham University. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant at KPMG and became a partner in 1991, retiring in 2012, having been the office managing partner at the Stoke on Trent and Liverpool offices.

He was an auditor and forensic accountant and dealt primarily with private sector clients within a cross section of sectors including;  minerals, education, charities, manufacturing , retail , and the legal profession.

Since 2012 Ian has been a non-executive Director at East Cheshire NHS Trust.
